Seeking an XR Specialist for the Atlantic Institute

Published on March 8, 2023

We have an exciting new opportunity for an XR (Extended Reality) Specialist to join the Atlantic Institute and Rhodes Trust teams. We believe the future landscape of social justice will be shaped by XR Extended Reality, the term used to describe immersive technologies that merge the physical and digital worlds, including virtual/augmented realities, mixed, merged reality, or what some refer to as the embodied internet, web three or the metaverse.

A new dedicated XR Space will be part of extensive renovations at Rhodes House in the heart of Oxford. The successful candidate will have the specialist skills to provide day-to-day onsite support to Atlantic Fellows, Rhodes Scholars and staff using the XR Space at Rhodes House. They will manage the loan store, assist at workshops and offer technical support.

We are seeking someone with proven experience in lowering the barriers in technologically novel environments, with an undergraduate degree or significant experience in Creative Computing, Computer, Science, Interaction Design or similar areas. They will need to lead technical demonstrations of new and innovative technology to users, with an understanding of XR-related concepts such as positional tracking, spatial audio and plane detection, troubleshooting, maintaining equipment and ensuring the user feels safe and confident.

The XR specialist will be employed by the Rhodes Trust with joint responsibilities for both the Rhodes Trust and the Atlantic Institute. Click here for job details.

Alice Wroe, XR Lead at the Atlantic Institute, said: “We are incredibly excited about the launch of the XR Space and the recruitment of the XR Specialist. It is vital that Atlantic Fellows are not passive recipients of new technologies, but rather at the forefront of using this medium, shaping and harnessing its potential for social good. The XR Specialist will be pivotal in making the possibilities of immersive technologies a reality for our community.”

Atlantic Fellow, Wilneida Negron, said: “Because we are a global, multidisciplinary community of changemakers committed to disrupting structural inequality, we are uniquely positioned to fill a much-needed gap and lead on the exploration of the promise, potential and implications of AR/VR inside and outside the Atlantic Fellowship community.”
